Chef Stéphane Jégo is an odd character in the Parisian restaurant scene, where he opened and runs L’Ami Jean, deep in the heart of the 7th arrondissement of Paris. This bistronomic wiz is positioned at the highest end of the scale, with a mission to produce quality food at affordable prices, while using 3-star Michelin raw materials, handled professionally to produce surprisingly wild and creative, crazy and mostly very tasty cuisine, in a space that feels like a “local bistro” in the best sense you can imagine.
L’Ami Jean is a small and crowded restaurant that feels like a friendly tavern, where the waiters are amicable and joke with every dish they bring you and the chef yells out loudly dish names to be prepared and instructions to the open-kitchen team, for all diners to hear. Not a common sight, and actually very exceptional at this level of fine dining. The dishes are unique and some are rare, truly the best imaginable quality raw materials prepared by professional hands. And the taste, OMG, the taste! Rarely does a restaurant hit my palate so precisely and perfectly. I love it and have kept coming back for years now. Enjoy quality food at Michelin level in a wild country style neighborhood bistro, where the atmosphere is as pleasant as the waiting staff who serve you in a generous and friendly manner.
It isn’t and will never be a Michelin starred restaurant, it doesn’t wish to be. The focus is not on plating and presentations and molecular pyrotechnics. It is essentially fine-dining of bursting creativity and uncompromising quality, where you can hear the chef shout out your order, and have it delivered on your plate in bountiful servings, by the friendliest staff, in a fun, bold and chummy atmosphere. Definitely an experience worth having. The bottom line here, which is the most important thing for all of us when we dine at a restaurant – is the taste. It’s crazy tasty at L’Ami Jean!
Some of the dishes on the fixed menu have become ironclad cult dishes, like the cold parmigiano soup, the now legendary Riz Au Lait, and other must taste regulars. The rest of the dishes change along with the chef’s creative mood. A journey of the palate and the five senses.
