This classic French bistro is populated by local French guests, the service is arrogant and unfriendly to foreigners. But those who will trudge through local haughtiness will be highly compensated by the serving on their plate.
You will find great and excellent versions of French cuisine star dishes in this veteran bistro. The presentation on the plate may be “rural” and far from the new world of culinary styling, but we are here for the bite, and our palate is giddy with joy.
You can find Pâté de Campagne, herring with potatoes, langoustines in herbs and foie gras among the appetizers, and you will undoubtedly enjoy every one of them. But, I come back to Chez Dumonet for one specific dish that you shouldn’t pass on. The best beef bourguignon you could ever hope to eat. Every time I cook this dish at home I try to emulate the taste, the experience and everything that comes in that bowl. Don’t miss out on Chez Dumonet’s beef bourguignon!
Among the main course dishes you can also find a grilled pigeon with crispy potatoes, duck confit, lamb shank, steak tartare and more.
The waiters are stiff in their suits and scowling expression, you’ll find red velvet in the lavatories, and everything else that screams “old bistro”. A heavy meal with generous portions.
It’s a good idea to leave some room for dessert, all of which can be mistakenly thought to have been made at home by traditional methods. Contemplate on whether to have the mille-feuille (Napoleon cake) or the huge grand marnier souffle, each one will satisfy two diners. Maybe you’d be better off not to plan a night out dancing after this meal, and the next day you can enjoy an easy “salad day”.
